Important Women in Motorcycle History

Bike Accident Attorneys

Our bike accident attorneys are excited to celebrate Women’s History Month by sharing some iconic women in motorcycle history! Women have been part of the motorcycling world since its invention. While they might not feature in the history books as much as their male counterparts, women have significantly contributed to the rise of motorcycling and are still a major force today.

In recent years, women have continued to break new ground. In the United States, female riders have been an integral part of the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) since its inception. Women have also formed their own organizations, such as Ladies of Harley and Women in the Wind, which provide support and ride programs for female motorcyclists.

Today, women motorcyclists can be found worldwide, from beginner riders to professional racers. They are tackling every type of riding imaginable – from motocross to touring, street riding to endurance racing – proving that gender does not define what is possible on two wheels. There is nothing stopping a woman from achieving her dream of becoming a motorcycle enthusiast or taking on any adventure she pleases. Here are a few women who made history on their motorcycles.

Avis and Effie Hotchkiss

Effie Hotchkiss first learned to ride motorcycles at the age of only 16. In 1915, she got her first Harley-Davidson, a model 11-F with a sidecar. The Harley-Davidson Model 11-F was the first to feature a 3-speed gearbox. Effie made it her goal to become the first woman to travel across the United States, from Brooklyn, New York, to San Francisco on a motorcycle. On May 2, 1915, she began her journey across the United States with her mother, Avis, in the sidecar. It took them two months to reach San Francisco, California. After reaching the Pacific Ocean at Ocean Beach, the two women were photographed pouring out a jar of Atlantic seawater into the Pacific Ocean. Their successful journey made Effie and Avis the first transcontinental female motorcyclists.

Susan Lang

In 1915, Mrs. Susan Lang broke a record for the longest-distance solo motorcycle trip. She even brought her three kids in the sidecar! Susan Lang is also recognized as one of the most accomplished motorcycle mechanics in the US, both male and female.

Valerie Thompson

Valerie Thompson is the fastest female motorcycle racer in the world and a ten-time land speed record holder with membership in the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame. She is a member of eight 200 MPH clubs and one 300(!) MPH club. Valerie is the designated rider for the famous BUB 7 motorcycle streamliner. This American-built streamliner has held the motorcycle land-speed record twice from 2006-2008 and again from 2009-2010.

Dorothy “Dot” Robinson

Dorothy “Dot” Robinson established one of the first women’s first motorcycle groups, Motorcycle Maids, which still exists today. She was the president for 25 years. She was also known as an impressive racer, earning her first victory in a 100-mile endurance run with a perfect score. She also took second place in a very challenging two-day “Jack Pine” enduro in 1937, a race where less than half the racers even finished. She later went on to win the Jack Pine in 1940. She is estimated to have ridden her motorcycles more than 1.5 million miles in her lifetime. She is often called “The First Lady of Motorcycling,” thanks to the efforts she put into motorcycling. She was inducted into the American Motorcycle Association Hall of Fame in 1998.

5 social media tips to follow during a personal injury lawsuit

social media posts during a personal injury lawsuit

If you are currently fighting a personal injury lawsuit, it is vital to maintain a certain level of decorum when posting on social media. Social media can damage your case significantly and even give the opposing attorney an upper hand. Contrarily, being thoughtful and responsible on social media profiles can help your lawyer build your case.

Do not post about your personal injury lawsuit!

The biggest rule for being in a personal injury lawsuit is to not post ANYTHING about your case online. This silence can help reduce the information the other side has to use against you. Since you are not a lawyer, you will likely not know what to say online that will not count against you.

Minimize your social media reach.

If possible, make your accounts private or set to friends only. Privacy is valuable during your case and will help prevent anyone from seeing your posts that could hurt your case. Do not add any new friends or allow any new followers until after your case. Insurance adjusters and private investigators are notorious for finding your social media profiles and adding you as a friend to get a deeper look into your life.

Do not post about your injury!

If you do post on social media, do not mention your injury that is included in the lawsuit. Any updates about your injury, medical treatments, surgeries, or physical therapy can be taken out of context and potentially used against you. Even a simple “feeling good today!” can be taken out of context to prove you were not truly affected by your injuries in the ways you claim.

Do not post any travel photos!

Do not post anything about physical movement or travel on your profiles! It can be used against you in court if it appears you are well enough to travel and take a vacation.

Encourage family and friends to do the same!

Personal injury lawsuits are serious business. Do not let family or friends post anything about you. They should follow the same rules you are following.

Activities in Corpus Christi During Spring Break

Now that winter break is over and students are back in school, many people have already begun to plan their spring break activities. Originally intended to give college students a chance to travel home to see family, catch up on schoolwork before finals arrived, or escape from the day-to-day stresses of college life, spring break has become quite a bit more. These days, spring break is synonymous with travel, beach time and parties.

If you are looking for something to do and somewhere to go this spring break, Corpus Christi is widely recognized as one of Texas’ most popular spring break destinations. Our city has all sorts of activities geared to all age groups – including college-age students, high school students, and even families with younger children.

Spring Break Activities Ideal for College Students

Whether you are a student at The University of Texas at Austin, Rice University, Trinity University, Southwestern University, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor University or any other college in Texas, Corpus Christi is a premier spring break destination. If you plan on driving, many of you should be able to reach Corpus Christi in less than five hours. San Antonio is only two and a half hours away. Austin and Houston are about four hours, and students heading out from College Station can expect about a five-hour drive.

Due to the fact that part of the city of Corpus Christi can be found on nearby Padre Island, college students have their choice of beach-front locales on the Gulf coast, or closer in along Corpus Christi Bay. Many locales allow for surfing, boating, kiteboarding, or simply relaxing along a remote seashore. In fact, Corpus Christi has miles of nearby beaches, including Padre Island, Padre Island National Seashore, Mustang Island, Corpus Christi Beach, and North Beach.

There is no shortage of places for food and entertainment either, with more than 750 restaurants and 170 bars and clubs scattered throughout the city.

Above and beyond going to the beach, hitting the local bars and exploring Corpus Christi’s epicurean delights, here are a few more spring break activities adventurous college students can enjoy:

  • Take an epicurean tour through some of the best restaurants Corpus Christi has to offer.
  • Get in a round of golf or a game of tennis.
  • Plan a party and huge bonfire at the beach for you and your friends.
  • Go scuba diving or parasailing.
  • Head over to the Corpus Christi Marina’s Wednesday night sailboat regatta to watch the race. If you’re feeling up to it, spectators are welcome to join in and even help crew the boats.

How High School Students Can Make the Most of Spring Break in Corpus Christi

High school students who live in or around the local area, or who are traveling here with family, can also make the most of spring break in Corpus Christi. Here are a few activities high school age students may enjoy:

pins_jstephenconnHead out to the beach. Corpus Christi has miles of coastline and a wide variety of beachfront destinations, including Padre Island, Padre Island National Seashore, Mustang Island, Corpus Christi Beach, and North Beach. You can go swimming, take surf lessons, test out your windsurfing skills, go kayaking, ride bikes, go sailing, learn how to scuba dive, or simply opt to soaking up some midday sun.

thelex_scottsanford-300x200Visit the USS Lexington. “The Lex”, as it is known by locals, is a retired World War II-era aircraft carrier that has been refurbished and opened up to the general public as a museum. The Lex features numerous exhibits of interest to folks of all ages. Visitors can view many different types of aircraft up close, and more daring types can try their hand at a flight simulator. Tours run daily between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Admission is $13.95 for adults and children over the age of 12. Schools and other groups can arrange overnight camping trips on the USS Lexington for groups of students.

schlitterbahn_galvestoncom-300x225Plan a trip to the highly acclaimed Schlitterbahn Waterpark. With indoor and outdoor water slides, and a variety of other attractions, what’s not to enjoy?

Activities Geared Towards Families with Younger Children

Families with younger children can also enjoy spring break in Corpus Christi as our city has numerous activities you are sure to enjoy.

  • The Texas State Aquarium is a fun place for families. To accommodate visitors, the aquarium usually stays open late during spring break. It also offers a “Saving Our Seas: Spring Break Camp” for children in Kindergarten through 5th The camp runs daily March 16-20 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The cost per child is $225 for members and $250 for non-members.
  • Families can head out to Padre Island National Seashore (PINS) to do some camping, fishing, swimming, trying their hand at surfing, taking walks along the beach and more. Entry is $10 per vehicle and another $8 per campsite, for those wishing to stay the night.

How to Avoid Drunk Driving While Vacationing in Corpus Christi

While many fun memories can be made during spring break, visitors need to take certain precautions when vacationing in Corpus Christi. One of the most important is knowing how to avoid drunk driving. It is not uncommon for college students and others to go barhopping or attend numerous nightly parties while on spring break. If any of one of these individuals were to get behind the wheel while intoxicated, the end result could prove deadly.

If you are planning to consume alcohol while on vacation, designate a sober driver or call a taxi. Do not consume alcohol if you are under the legal drinking age. Texas has a zero tolerance law when it comes to underage individuals drinking and driving, so the consequences will be harsh. Even those individuals who do not plan on getting drunk while on spring break should arrange alternate transportation to get back to their hotels. Should you see another driver swerving or driving erratically, report the matter to local law enforcement and steer clear so you do not inadvertently become a drunk driving victim. If you do end up being involved in a drunk driving accident, speak with a personal injury attorney at Herrman & Herrman, P.L.L.C., about your legal rights.
