Activities in Corpus Christi During Spring Break

Now that winter break is over and students are back in school, many people have already begun to plan their spring break activities. Originally intended to give college students a chance to travel home to see family, catch up on schoolwork before finals arrived, or escape from the day-to-day stresses of college life, spring break has become quite a bit more. These days, spring break is synonymous with travel, beach time and parties.

If you are looking for something to do and somewhere to go this spring break, Corpus Christi is widely recognized as one of Texas’ most popular spring break destinations. Our city has all sorts of activities geared to all age groups – including college-age students, high school students, and even families with younger children.

Spring Break Activities Ideal for College Students

Whether you are a student at The University of Texas at Austin, Rice University, Trinity University, Southwestern University, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor University or any other college in Texas, Corpus Christi is a premier spring break destination. If you plan on driving, many of you should be able to reach Corpus Christi in less than five hours. San Antonio is only two and a half hours away. Austin and Houston are about four hours, and students heading out from College Station can expect about a five-hour drive.

Due to the fact that part of the city of Corpus Christi can be found on nearby Padre Island, college students have their choice of beach-front locales on the Gulf coast, or closer in along Corpus Christi Bay. Many locales allow for surfing, boating, kiteboarding, or simply relaxing along a remote seashore. In fact, Corpus Christi has miles of nearby beaches, including Padre Island, Padre Island National Seashore, Mustang Island, Corpus Christi Beach, and North Beach.

There is no shortage of places for food and entertainment either, with more than 750 restaurants and 170 bars and clubs scattered throughout the city.

Above and beyond going to the beach, hitting the local bars and exploring Corpus Christi’s epicurean delights, here are a few more spring break activities adventurous college students can enjoy:

  • Take an epicurean tour through some of the best restaurants Corpus Christi has to offer.
  • Get in a round of golf or a game of tennis.
  • Plan a party and huge bonfire at the beach for you and your friends.
  • Go scuba diving or parasailing.
  • Head over to the Corpus Christi Marina’s Wednesday night sailboat regatta to watch the race. If you’re feeling up to it, spectators are welcome to join in and even help crew the boats.

How High School Students Can Make the Most of Spring Break in Corpus Christi

High school students who live in or around the local area, or who are traveling here with family, can also make the most of spring break in Corpus Christi. Here are a few activities high school age students may enjoy:

pins_jstephenconnHead out to the beach. Corpus Christi has miles of coastline and a wide variety of beachfront destinations, including Padre Island, Padre Island National Seashore, Mustang Island, Corpus Christi Beach, and North Beach. You can go swimming, take surf lessons, test out your windsurfing skills, go kayaking, ride bikes, go sailing, learn how to scuba dive, or simply opt to soaking up some midday sun.

thelex_scottsanford-300x200Visit the USS Lexington. “The Lex”, as it is known by locals, is a retired World War II-era aircraft carrier that has been refurbished and opened up to the general public as a museum. The Lex features numerous exhibits of interest to folks of all ages. Visitors can view many different types of aircraft up close, and more daring types can try their hand at a flight simulator. Tours run daily between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Admission is $13.95 for adults and children over the age of 12. Schools and other groups can arrange overnight camping trips on the USS Lexington for groups of students.

schlitterbahn_galvestoncom-300x225Plan a trip to the highly acclaimed Schlitterbahn Waterpark. With indoor and outdoor water slides, and a variety of other attractions, what’s not to enjoy?

Activities Geared Towards Families with Younger Children

Families with younger children can also enjoy spring break in Corpus Christi as our city has numerous activities you are sure to enjoy.

  • The Texas State Aquarium is a fun place for families. To accommodate visitors, the aquarium usually stays open late during spring break. It also offers a “Saving Our Seas: Spring Break Camp” for children in Kindergarten through 5th The camp runs daily March 16-20 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The cost per child is $225 for members and $250 for non-members.
  • Families can head out to Padre Island National Seashore (PINS) to do some camping, fishing, swimming, trying their hand at surfing, taking walks along the beach and more. Entry is $10 per vehicle and another $8 per campsite, for those wishing to stay the night.

How to Avoid Drunk Driving While Vacationing in Corpus Christi

While many fun memories can be made during spring break, visitors need to take certain precautions when vacationing in Corpus Christi. One of the most important is knowing how to avoid drunk driving. It is not uncommon for college students and others to go barhopping or attend numerous nightly parties while on spring break. If any of one of these individuals were to get behind the wheel while intoxicated, the end result could prove deadly.

If you are planning to consume alcohol while on vacation, designate a sober driver or call a taxi. Do not consume alcohol if you are under the legal drinking age. Texas has a zero tolerance law when it comes to underage individuals drinking and driving, so the consequences will be harsh. Even those individuals who do not plan on getting drunk while on spring break should arrange alternate transportation to get back to their hotels. Should you see another driver swerving or driving erratically, report the matter to local law enforcement and steer clear so you do not inadvertently become a drunk driving victim. If you do end up being involved in a drunk driving accident, speak with a personal injury attorney at Herrman & Herrman, P.L.L.C., about your legal rights.

Highway Accidents Are Top Cause of Oil Field Worker Deaths

Thinking about jobs that are inherently dangerous, oil and gas industries come right to mind. They are certainly at the top of the list.  The most recent data shows that years 2013 through 2017, 489 oil and gas extraction workers were killed while at work, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Many are familiar with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, but explosions are typically what come to mind when we think of oilfield accidents. While such events are undoubtedly catastrophic, there are other risks involved when working on the oilfield.

Truck Driver Fatigue and Hours-of-Service Rules

Fatigue among truck drivers is a leading cause of commercial vehicle accidents in the United States. Tired drivers are less alert and have slower reaction times than rested drivers, and exhausted truck drivers may even fall asleep at the wheel, often with fatal consequences.

Since truck driver fatigue can be deadly, the FMCSA governs how many hours a driver may work in a day and how many consecutive driving hours may be included in a driver’s daily schedule. It also regulates how many rest-breaks truck drivers must take, including overnight time to get sufficient sleep.

Oil Field Exemptions: Deadly Exceptions

Unfortunately, the hours-of-service rules that help most truck drivers stay safe do not apply to oilfield haulers or oil well drivers. A provision in the rules exempts these drivers from daily hours-of-service rules and on-duty time regulations.

  • Employers of oilfield haulers are only required to provide 24 hours of rest after 70 hours on-duty in an eight-day time frame if their drivers haul equipment to supply oilfield operations.
  • Oil well drivers that haul supplies between wells may not be allowed to include time waiting at the well-site as on-duty time. Often, such drivers may wait over 20 hours to unload and may not be allowed to rest before beginning their return drive.

Both situations create unsafe conditions for drivers, frequently leading to accidents

The motorcycle accident lawyers 4 signs you love your motorcycle

Motorcycle injury attorney

If you spend more time talking about your motorcycle than your significant other, you might be in love with your bike. Our motorcycle accident lawyers assembled 4 signs that you’re head-over-heels for your two wheels. Do any of these resonate with you?

You love the feeling of freedom when you’re out on the open road

Rolling down the highway with the wind on your face is a feeling like no other. Nothing is more refreshing, from long motorcycle trips to pleasure drives, than hitting the open road. Riding your motorcycle is one of life’s simple pleasures. And with a motorcycle lawyer at your side, you can drive fearlessly, knowing that if you are ever in an accident, you will have some powerful representation. When you hit the open road, make sure you and your motorcycle are protected!

You named your motorcycle

If you are really in love with your motorcycle, you have probably given it a fun name that fits the bike’s personality. Naming your two-wheeled companion can make it feel more special to ride around or mention when talking with your friends. The name can be funny or meaningful, but if you took the time to name your motorcycle, you might be in love with your bike.

You take care of it like it’s your baby – washing it, polishing it, and keeping it in pristine condition

Who said taking care of an inanimate object was strange? When it comes to your motorcycle, you are like a motorcycle lawyer arguing before the court. You put in a lot of effort to keep it clean and running smooth – from hand-washing it every Friday to polishing it sparingly on Sundays. It’s not an obsession; it’s like having one precious baby that needs my round-the-clock care! Again, if you treat your motorcycle like one of your children, you are probably in love with your bike.

You’re always talking about your motorcycle to your friends, even if they don’t ride

Whenever you are with friends, the conversation always comes back to your motorcycle! Not only do you love it for its power and freedom, but also for the amazing people you’ve met through it. From day trips to weekend journeys, riding your motorcycle always feels great. Whether it is the wind passing you by or feeling the motorcycle’s strength as you speed and slow, it is an experience you want to share with everyone, especially those that do not ride!

In love with your motorcycle or not, your motorcycle is a part of your identity. It’s something that you’ve poured time and money into taking care of. If you’re like most riders, your motorcycle brings you an unparalleled feeling of joy and freedom whenever you take it out on the road. But accidents happen–even to the most careful riders. That’s why we’re here, to help pick up the pieces after an accident so that you can get back on your bike and enjoy life as soon as possible. Give us a call today – no matter what time it is – and let us help shoulder some of the burden after an accident. We’re here for you 24/7 because we know that motorcycles are more than just vehicles–they’re a way of life.

7 Essential tools for the Do-It-Yourself motorcycle mechanic

Motorcycle accident lawyer texas

Riding a motorcycle is fun, but owning a motorcycle requires maintenance. For most riders, this job is a welcomed task they look forward to, often only leaving the most technical tasks to the mechanic shops. Knowing what tools are the best investment for your bike can be a daunting assessment. If you are wondering where to start, the motorcycle lawyers got you covered!

motorcycle lawyer

BIKE STANDS

Most of the time, the stand a motorcycle comes with will be fine for parking. Still, if you are going to work on a motorcycle, you will need a bike stand. Whether you choose a front stand, a center stand, a rear stand, or a combination, a bike stand is an essential tool for motorcycle owners.

motorcycle accident lawyer

WRENCHES

Much of the maintenance done on a motorcycle will require a wrench. A high-quality collection of wrenches and torque wrenches in different sizes and lengths will make things much smoother when you need them. Ratcheting combination wrenches will also be a life-saver the day you need them.

motorcycle accident attorney

SCREWDRIVERS

Like wrenches, much of the daily maintenance and checkups for your motorcycle will require screwdrivers. A versatile screwdriver set is a must for any motorcycle owner. A good collection would include both flathead tips and Phillips head tips at varying lengths.

PLIERS

Just like wrenches and screwdrivers, these tools are necessary for much of the maintenance required. Keep a nice variety of pliers for whenever you need them.

tire compressor texas motorcycle lawyer

TIRE COMPRESSOR

Tire pressure is critical to a rider’s safety. A portable tire compressor you can use at home or on the road will keep you safe while riding. Check your owner’s manual for your exact tire pressure recommendations.

battery charger motorcycle accident attorney

BATTERY CHARGER

This one is crucial if you are not a daily rider. Motorcycle batteries often die if the bike stays inside during the winter or sits in the garage too long. A battery charger will keep your battery running and keep you on the road.

multimeter motorcycle crash attorney

MULTIMETER

A multimeter is essential to much of the work you will do on your bike. A multimeter allows you to check the battery’s voltage and troubleshoot electrical issues. It does not need to be an expensive multimeter, either. You only need the basics, DC voltage, continuity, and resistance.

6 Signs of Brain Damage to Look Out For

If you or someone you know has been involved in an auto accident, sporting accident, or another sudden impact, you should always be on the lookout for signs of potential traumatic brain injury, or TBI. Here are six signs to keep in mind.

  1. Loss of Consciousness

Someone who has had a traumatic brain injury may fall in and out of consciousness after their collision. Concussions often cause this specific symptom of brain injury.

  1. Persistent Headache

Headaches are unfortunately a common problem of everyday life. However, having persistent headaches after a traumatic accident or large fall can be a sign of something deeper going on. If persistent headaches continue or worsen over time, you should seek medical attention.

  1. Confusion

Confusion or disorientation following an injury or fall can point to a larger brain injury. People experiencing confusion may have trouble stinging together sentences or doing everyday tasks. If someone’s confusion does not get better with time, it could be a sign of brain damage.

  1. Memory Loss

If someone is experiencing memory loss that is associated with brain damage, it is likely to manifest as more than simply being a bit forgetful throughout a hectic day. It is more likely that their memory loss would be larger chunks of time or periods of “blackout” in their memories. Memory loss is a serious symptom of brain injury or damage.

  1. Slurring or Slow Speech

If someone who has just been in an accident or sports injury experiences slurred or slowing speech, it can be a symptom of brain damage from that incident. These speech anomalies can come in different forms, so it is important to pay attention to your friend’s speech to correctly ascertain what is happening.

  1. Mood Swings

Brain damage can change the way people interact with each other and the world, depending on the type and the severity of the injury. This is more than simply being emotional, this is drastic changes in a person’s behavior.
