PET OF THE MONTH LADY BIRD

Springtime is a great time to add a new member to the family!

ABOUT LADY BIRD

Lady Bird has been at Houston SPCA for longer than expected. Lady Bird is a loving, active one-year-old lab mix looking for her forever home. She weighs 46 pounds and has learned human words like “sit,” “shake,” “lay down,” and “wait at the door.” Lady Bird loves walking, running, hiking, and living an active lifestyle. Lady Bird enjoys playing with other dogs, especially high-energy dogs. She only needs to be introduced before so that they can become friends. Lady Bird is super excitable and does not always understand how big she is, jumping on things and people. She has been learning not to jump on things and people, but she will need a loving family to guide her on how to behave properly.

If interested, you can visit Lady Bird and hang out together in the Houston SPCA play yard. Adoption costs $95 and includes:

  • A microchip.
  • Spay surgery.
  • Up-to-date vaccinations.
  • A sample bag of Hill’s pet nutrition.
  • A free post-exam from ANY VCA animal hospital.

ADOPT LADY BIRD TODAY!

Herrman and Herrman PLLC is helping Houston SPCA spread awareness about Lady Bird to get her the forever home she deserves. If you are interested in adopting, email info@HoustonSPCA.org or visit www.HoustonSPCA.org for more information.

“COLORES DE LA VIDA” Mural by Mayra Zamora

In April 2020, Herrman and Herrman PLLC commissioned Artist Mayra Zamora to design our building with a mural. The mural was finished May 2020 and is titled “VIVA CCTX.” VIVA CCTX is a rainbow-like mural with many black and white hidden messages for viewers to decipher over time. There are heavy influences from Pre-Columbian and Modern art in her mural. The mural also features symbols local to the Corpus Christi area, like the Texas A&M Corpus Christi University logos, Del Mar College logos (both are schools she went to), and city, state, and national flags.

In April 2021, we commissioned Mayra Zamora a second time to continue “VIVA CCTX.” Mayra Zamora finished the second edition of the mural in June of 2021. This mural is in the same Mexican-American iridescent style with coded black and white messaging as the first edition. The most significant difference is the symbols initially only dedicated to the community are now highlighting symbols synonymous with law and the local community.

In July 2021, our law firm commissioned Mayra once more to create a third mural as part of our building. This mural is painted onto our law firm’s window shutters and resembles the design of an authentic Mexican blanket known as a “serape.” This third mural is again in the same stunning polychromatic design rooted in culture local to our community and Zamora’s heritage.

Together, the three murals are titled “COLORES DE LA VIDA,” meaning Colors of life in English. Colores De La Vida is the first LGBTQ+ mural in Corpus Christi. Mayra Zamora and her team worked on these murals for over a year and are a sensation to see, worth taking a focused, in-depth look to appreciate the beauty and decipher the hidden messages in her work.

Mayra Zamora had help painting her three murals to cover the entire building. Eugene Soliz, Jose Gonzalez IV, Eva McLain, Natalia Hinojasa, Heaven Garrison, and Jocelyn Castillo were her assistants.

ABOUT MAYRA ZAMORA

Mayra Zamora is an award-winning artist, muralist, and educator. She was born in Austin, Tx. She moved to Corpus Christi to receive her Bachelor’s Degree in Art and Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

Zamora is a freelance artist who works as an Education Specialist for the Early Childhood Development Center and an Art Instructor for K Space Contemporary. Zamora’s art has been featured in exhibitions across the United States in New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, and many other cities. Zamora has created murals for Stripes Convenience Stores, the Art Center of Corpus Christi, K Space Contemporary, and many others. Mayra Zamora was recently awarded the Young Alumnus Award from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and Best Local Painter for The Bend Magazine’s Local List in 2020. She was also a finalist for the “Best In Biz” Dora Cervera Mirabel Women’s Leadership Award, Best Box Art Winner from CC Bliss Box, and CC 40 under 40 by Young Business Professionals in 2018. The Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas awarded Mayra Zamora the Arts and Humanities Estrella Award in 2017.

Mayra has dedicated much of her work to the fundamentals of art and her Mexican heritage. You can see this influence through her use of lines, shapes, color, and the impressive incorporation of Mexican-American iconography, inspired by Pre-Columbian and Modern Art. Her artwork is often a kaleidoscope of colors with a black and touch, encoding many hidden messages for viewers to decipher with time.

Mayra Zamora can be found online @MiraMayraArt on Instagram or contacted at miramayraart@yahoo.com. Find more of her work at www.miramayraart.com.

How to Drive in Wintry Weather

1 How To Drive In Wintry Weather Herrman and Herrman PLLC

Icy weather is no joke. 😰 Please avoid driving if you can.

Here are some tips on what you should do if you need to be on the road.

1. USE CAUTION WHEN DRIVING OVER BRIDGES AND PASSES, AS THESE ARE THE FIRST TO FREEZE.

2. REDUCE YOUR SPEED! A VEHICLE NEEDS AT LEAST THREE TIMES MORE SPACE TO STOP ON A SLICK ROADWAY. DON’T APPLY BRAKES SUDDENLY AND AVOID USING CRUISE CONTROL.

3. SLOW DOWN WHEN APPROACHING EMERGENCY OR MAINTENANCE VEHICLES, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEIR FLASHING LIGHTS ARE ON. THE LAW REQUIRES YOU TO MAINTAIN A DISTANCE OF AT LEAST 200 FEET WHEN APPROACHING CREWS.

4. DON’T PASS ON THE RIGHT AND BE CAUTIOUS OF VISIBILITY DURING WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS.

5. BE PATIENT. KEEP TO THE MAIN ROADS AND AVOID TAKING SHORTCUTS THROUGH TERRITORY THAT MAY NOT HAVE BEEN TREATED.

6. CHECK AREA WEATHER CONDITIONS ON RADIO OR TELEVISION BEFORE STARTING A TRIP.

Will Newly Mandated In-Car Technology Stop Drunk Driving Accidents?

Alcohol breath-testing devicesA provision of President Biden’s $1.2 trillion infrastructure program could substantially reduce the threat of drunk driving accidents by the end of the decade. One of several road-safety provisions in the infrastructure bill requires the federal government to finalize rules within three years for alcohol-detection technology to stop intoxicated drivers from operating vehicles, then require automakers to put the technology in new cars within two years.

A 2020 study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) said that alcohol-detection technology could prevent a fourth of alcohol-related traffic deaths, saving an estimated 9,400 lives a year. The most promising of technologies in development is a passive alcohol sensor that detects a potential drunk driver’s blood-alcohol content (BAC) by measuring the ambient air in the vehicle.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving says passage of the legislation marks “the beginning of the end of drunk driving,” according to Fortune magazine. But the proposal also raises questions about who would be liable if a drunk driver managed to override a malfunctioning system and crashed.

The auto industry is wondering whether manufacturers will assume responsibility for drunk driving accidents not stopped by their technology. Malfunctions are inevitable, especially in the early years of a newly adopted technology. Insurers want to know whether losses caused by malfunctions will be covered by personal auto insurance or automakers.

This will be a big preview of what happens when self-driving vehicles become the norm,” Dan Hearsch, managing director of automotive and industrial management consulting at AlixPartners, told Fortune. “When a crash occurs and someone is injured, who is at fault? The courts are going to have to decide, and they’re going to set a precedent for our autonomous future.”

DUI Statistics in the US and Texas

Traffic statistics show that drunk driving remains a lethal threat on U.S. and Texas highways.

The IIHS said last year that alcohol has been a factor in 30 percent of U.S. roadway deaths every year for the past decade. Meanwhile, police arrest about 1 million people a year for alcohol-impaired driving.

During the pandemic year of 2020, Texas recorded 963 DUI-alcohol-related fatalities in Texas, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. On average, a person in Texas died every nine hours and six minutes as a result of a traffic crash involving alcohol.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says 10,142 people nationwide died in drunk-driving crashes in 2019. That’s about 28 people killed in alcohol-related crashes every day or one person killed every 52 minutes.

Existing Technology to Stop Drunk Driving

Ignition interlock systems, which require the driver to satisfy a breath-testing unit before a car will start, have been available for years. Texas and most other states require drivers convicted of drunk driving to install interlock devices on their vehicles.

In a survey of U.S. drivers, nearly two-thirds of the respondents said they would support the installation of similar systems in all vehicles, as long as they were fast, accurate, and unobtrusive, the IIHS says.

Volvo and other manufacturers offer optional camera systems in vehicles that can detect unsafe driving actions and intervene to stop the vehicle.

Nissan has developed a new concept car with multiple preventive features against drunk-driving, including:a group of friend tossing a glass full of beer

  • Alcohol odor sensors
  • Facial monitoring, which detects signs of drowsiness
  • Operational behavior monitoring that detects if the vehicle is drifting out of its driving lane

A public-private partnership called the Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety (DADSS) project is road-testing a passive alcohol sensor that detects the driver’s BAC by measuring the air inside the vehicle.

Officials with the DADSS project expect some manufacturers to begin offering the ambient-air-based alcohol-detection system as an option as early as 2025.

The IIHS report concluded that even if alcohol detection systems were required as standard equipment in all new vehicles beginning this year, due to the number of older vehicles on the road, it will take 12 years before they become common enough in the U.S. to save 4,596 lives a year — less than half their potential.

A lot of safety features that start out as options quickly come to be seen as essential,” Charles Farmer, the IIHS’s vice president of research and the author of the paper, said in a statement. “It will take time for this technology to reach its full potential, but it is an important part of the overall strategy to reduce impaired driving.”

Who Will Take The Blame For Drunk Drivers in High-Tech Future?

Fortune magazine suggests that the Biden Administration’s mandate could force NHTSA to make recommendations for laws addressing self-driving vehicle technology, including liability for failures.

Some automakers have already announced that they take responsibility for fully self-driving functions, Fortune says. Volvo said in 2015 that it would accept all liability for autonomous cars, “but the liability factor for partially autonomous vehicles remains unclear,” the magazine says.

The New York State Bar Association, the largest voluntary state bar association in the country, created a task force on autonomous vehicles to examine legal questions about accident liability. The task force reported that “existing concepts of negligence, recklessness, misrepresentation, fraud and product liability should continue to apply” to advanced driver-assistance systems and autonomous vehicle cases.

“For the near to mid-term, the existing liability rules that hold human drivers and autonomous car manufactures accountable for unlawful driving or producing a defective product (respectively) should provide a robust and efficient incentive for appropriate investments in safe automated driving systems,” the task force concluded.
