MOTORCYCLE SAFETY INSPECTION GUIDELINE

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY INSPECTION GUIDELINE GRAPHIC

When was the last time you took a close look at your motorcycle before going on a ride? Not a quick glance but a real in-depth look at your bike and gear are performing. If it has been a while, we got you covered with our comprehensive motorcycle safety inspection guideline.

General Check

First, check the bike for noticeable issues like a crack, loose part, or leak. Make sure to look closely for anything that clearly needs repair. If anything is broken, repair it before taking the bike for a ride or inspection.

Tire Check

After looking around the bike for any general issues, inspect the tires to confirm they have enough tread and tire pressure. Check the tires to ensure they are at the manufacturer’s recommended PSI. Place a penny in the tire groove to check the tread with Lincoln’s head pointing toward the tire. If you can see Lincoln’s hairline on the tire’s surface, it is time to replace the tires.

Brake Check

After checking the tires, move on to the brakes. While you can check by looking for grooves in the brake pads, it is best to test the front and rear brakes to guarantee they work properly.

Electrical System Check

So now you have done a quick overall inspection, checked the tires, and brakes. Next is the electrical system. Start with the battery and the terminals attached to it. Inspect the terminals for any corrosion. There are plenty of at-home or DIY solutions to wipe off corrosion, if there is any on the terminals. After checking the battery and terminals, turn the bike on to see if there are any warning lights and that everything else lights up correctly. During this time, check the headlights, taillights, turn signals, brake lights, and horns to ensure they work properly. After that, check the handlebars to ensure they have the full range of motion.

Fluid Check

After the electrical system, check the bike’s fluids. This inspection means checking the engine oil, fork oil, brake fluid, and transmission fluid. Refill or replace any fluids that need it. After reviewing the fluids, check the hoses to verify everything is connected and there are no leaks or cracks.

Gear Check

Finally, make sure the gear protecting you is perfect. Check your helmet and confirm there are no cracks, and you can easily see through the visor. If there are any cracks, you should replace the helmet no matter how inconsequential the crack seems, as it can sabotage the helmet’s usefulness if ever needed. After the helmet, check your clothes, gloves, and shoes to be comfortable and have a full range of motion.

MOTORCYCLE ROAD TRIP PACK LIST

MOTORCYCLE ROAD TRIP PACK LIST IMAGE SAFETY TOOLS SPARE PARTS CLOTHES HYGIENE

With summer around the corner, a motorcycle road trip looks like a better idea every day. While that sounds exciting, creating a list of what items are necessary to bring can be a lot. Luckily, we have compiled a list for you to go over before your next motorcycle road trip.

SAFETY FIRST

Before any ride, make sure to bring your helmet. Wearing a helmet while riding is critical to protecting your safety and preventing a serious injury on the road. If you plan to buy a helmet, choose a breathable and comfy one to keep it on while traveling. If you are not buying a new helmet, check it for any cracks and confirm that you can easily see through the visor. Replace the helmet if there are any cracks. Even if the crack seems only superficial, it can cause real damage to the helmet and jeopardize your safety.

Flashlights, batteries, spare keys, and multi-tool or pocket are useful for many situations while traveling. Similarly, you should bring water, filling snacks, and a first aid kit to keep yourself safe during your trip. Other small items that can help improve a road trip are duct tape, portable chargers, a backpack, and Tylenol or other painkillers.

TOOLS AND SPARE PARTS

Next, pack tools and spare parts for your bike. You do not need to pack everything, but you should bring the essentials to keep yourself from having to find them on a road trip with no friends or family nearby. The tool kit should be compact. A small bag or pouch with a wrench and socket set, allen wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, and cable ties cover the basic needs in an emergency. Spare parts like spark plugs, wires, light bulbs, and fuses are easy to carry and replace if ever needed while on the road.

CLOTHES AND HYGIENE ITEMS

Finally, pack spare clothes and hygiene items for the road trip. Before leaving, check the weather where you are headed and pack accordingly. If you are traveling far, it is best to pack for every type of weather to avoid riding with the wrong clothing on. Rain clothes, gloves, boots, and other waterproof clothing are critical to keeping the ride dry and fun. If you will be on the road a lot, pack plenty of socks and underwear to stay comfortable. People will not notice if you repeat outfits, but you will notice not changing your socks or underwear. For hygiene items, get the travel size or transfer your home items into smaller containers to keep things light.

Before you go, check out our “Motorcycle Safety Inspection Guideline” to make sure your bike is ready for the road!

“COLORES DE LA VIDA” Mural by Mayra Zamora

In April 2020, Herrman and Herrman PLLC commissioned Artist Mayra Zamora to design our building with a mural. The mural was finished May 2020 and is titled “VIVA CCTX.” VIVA CCTX is a rainbow-like mural with many black and white hidden messages for viewers to decipher over time. There are heavy influences from Pre-Columbian and Modern art in her mural. The mural also features symbols local to the Corpus Christi area, like the Texas A&M Corpus Christi University logos, Del Mar College logos (both are schools she went to), and city, state, and national flags.

In April 2021, we commissioned Mayra Zamora a second time to continue “VIVA CCTX.” Mayra Zamora finished the second edition of the mural in June of 2021. This mural is in the same Mexican-American iridescent style with coded black and white messaging as the first edition. The most significant difference is the symbols initially only dedicated to the community are now highlighting symbols synonymous with law and the local community.

In July 2021, our law firm commissioned Mayra once more to create a third mural as part of our building. This mural is painted onto our law firm’s window shutters and resembles the design of an authentic Mexican blanket known as a “serape.” This third mural is again in the same stunning polychromatic design rooted in culture local to our community and Zamora’s heritage.

Together, the three murals are titled “COLORES DE LA VIDA,” meaning Colors of life in English. Colores De La Vida is the first LGBTQ+ mural in Corpus Christi. Mayra Zamora and her team worked on these murals for over a year and are a sensation to see, worth taking a focused, in-depth look to appreciate the beauty and decipher the hidden messages in her work.

Mayra Zamora had help painting her three murals to cover the entire building. Eugene Soliz, Jose Gonzalez IV, Eva McLain, Natalia Hinojasa, Heaven Garrison, and Jocelyn Castillo were her assistants.

ABOUT MAYRA ZAMORA

Mayra Zamora is an award-winning artist, muralist, and educator. She was born in Austin, Tx. She moved to Corpus Christi to receive her Bachelor’s Degree in Art and Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

Zamora is a freelance artist who works as an Education Specialist for the Early Childhood Development Center and an Art Instructor for K Space Contemporary. Zamora’s art has been featured in exhibitions across the United States in New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, and many other cities. Zamora has created murals for Stripes Convenience Stores, the Art Center of Corpus Christi, K Space Contemporary, and many others. Mayra Zamora was recently awarded the Young Alumnus Award from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and Best Local Painter for The Bend Magazine’s Local List in 2020. She was also a finalist for the “Best In Biz” Dora Cervera Mirabel Women’s Leadership Award, Best Box Art Winner from CC Bliss Box, and CC 40 under 40 by Young Business Professionals in 2018. The Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas awarded Mayra Zamora the Arts and Humanities Estrella Award in 2017.

Mayra has dedicated much of her work to the fundamentals of art and her Mexican heritage. You can see this influence through her use of lines, shapes, color, and the impressive incorporation of Mexican-American iconography, inspired by Pre-Columbian and Modern Art. Her artwork is often a kaleidoscope of colors with a black and touch, encoding many hidden messages for viewers to decipher with time.

Mayra Zamora can be found online @MiraMayraArt on Instagram or contacted at miramayraart@yahoo.com. Find more of her work at www.miramayraart.com.
